Pain relief

Our main aim during labour is to keep you as comfortable as possible. Some this will be down to good preparation before the big day (we can help you with some of this) and the other part is making sure that you have the right pain relief.

Before and on the day

Our top tips for being more relaxed during labour and more able to manage the pain are:

  • Learn about labour to help you feel more in control and less worried about the process; you can talk to your midwife or doctor, go to antenatal classes and ask us any questions
  • Try and learn some techniques to relax and stay calm, such as deep breathing
  • Keep moving – your position can make a lot of difference to how you are feeling, so try kneeling, walking around or rocking backwards and forwards
  • If you can, bring a partner, friend or relative to support you – but don't worry if you don't have anyone as your midwife will give you all of the care and assistance that you need

Pain relief

All women experience labour differently and that is why we have a full range of pain relief and complementary therapies to help you through the process of child birth.

We will make sure we talk you through all of the possible options to help you decide the best one for you and your baby. In this section of the website you can find out more about the pain relief we offer and others you may wish to consider.
