Continued care – introduction

After an uncomplicated birth, you may be ready to go home as soon as three to six hours after giving birth (see Going home).

But it may be that you need to remain in the Maternity Unit for a short time. This can occur if you have complications in labour, if either you or your baby requires medical treatment, or if you need extra support to recover.

In this case you will be cared for on the first floor postnatal ward of the maternity unit, in either a four-bed bay or one of our individual postnatal suites.
