Postnatal ward

After giving birth, it may be that you need to remain at the unit for a short time. This may be if you have complications in labour, if either you or your baby requires medical treatment, or if you need extra support to recover.

In this case you will be cared for on the first floor of the maternity unit, in either a four-bed bay in the postnatal ward or one of our individual postnatal suites.

Postnatal ward - daily routine

There are two staff shifts each day, with handover occuring between 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning and between 8:00 and 8:30 in evening. There are two ward coordinators, dressed in navy and white, available at all times to answer queries you may have.

Medicine rounds are at 8:00am, 12 noon, 2:00pm, 6:00pm and 10:00pm. You will be offered pain relief and any other medication that you require at that time.

You will have a midwife or obstetric nurse assigned to your care, to regularly review the progress of you and your baby. When it is time to go home, they also arrange your discharge.

Maternity assistants, dressed in green tunics, are also available to assist you with baby feeding, showering and other day-to-day activities.

We encourage all mothers, including those who have had Caesarean sections, to begin moving about as soon as possible and not to remain in bed to help maintain normality and reduce the risk of blood clots.

Please note! To keep you and your baby safe we ask that all mothers wear footwear when out of bed (slippers or flip flops are fine) and that you move your baby around in one of our wheeled cots.

Breakfast - Served daily between 8:30am and 9:30am - this is self-service. Cereals, toast, hot drinks and juices are available in the mother's dining room. If for any reason you are not mobile, or are detained breast feeding, a member of staff can collect your breakfast for you.

Lunch - Served daily from around 12:30pm. This can be collected from the kitchen next to the lifts once the hostess advises that the food is ready. You can select a hot meal or a light lunch, which can either be eaten at your bedside or in the mothers' dining room.

Evening meal - Served daily from around 5:30pm. The arrangements for this meal are the same as for lunch.

Snacks - The hostess will offer you a hot drink along with a biscuit or cake from her mobile trolley, which she takes around the ward both mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Please note! We have a microwave in the mother's dining room, so food from home can be heated up at your leisure. However this is at your own risk and we ask that you leave equipment as clean as you found it. Meals are only provided for mothers in postnatal care, not for partners.
